Dry Ranch Seasoning Mix – Ditch The Hidden Valley Packets!

Instead of grabbing the Hidden Valley or other store-bought packets of dry ranch seasoning mix that are full of unnecessary ingredients, make it yourself with just a few simple ingredients! It’s easy and delicious, and one batch is enough to replace over 6 packets of store-bought mixes!

There are many different recipes that call for using dry ranch seasoning mix. One of the favorites in our house is Mississippi Smash Burgers. But you can also use it to season popcorn, make a simple vegetable dip, or turn it into ranch dressing to use however you want (which comes in handy for us Ranch-loving people from the Midwest!).

Dry ranch seasoning mix
Homemade dry ranch seasoning mix is a great, healthier alternative to those store-bought packets. It’s easy to make, easy to store, and easy to use in so many ways!

Instead of having to scramble if I don’t have the packets on hand, I can relax knowing that I have a huge batch of homemade dry ranch seasoning to use instead! Yes, I’ve used the store-bought packets plenty of times, but now I know better and like to make homemade mixes whenever possible.

The Advantages Of Making It Homemade

Not only is making it at home quick and easy using ingredients I typically always have on hand, but I know exactly what ingredients go into the mix.

I mean, have you ever looked at the back of a Hidden Valley or similar ranch dressing packet? With moist, you will probably see a few ingredients you can’t pronounce as well as “Monosodium Glutamate” (more commonly known as “MSG”).

MSG is a flavor enhancer that is added to many different foods. You will often find it Chinese takeout. However, it is known to cause adverse reactions in some people.

With this homemade dry ranch seasoning mix, there is no MSG or unnecessary ingredients involved! Only simple ingredients to make a flavorful seasoning mix!

Ingredient for dry ranch seasoning mix
Eight ingredients – That’s all you need to make this homemade dry ranch seasoning mix. No fillers, no flavor enhancers, no food colorings – just eight simple ingredients. (And can you tell from this photo that I’m not brand-biased!?)

Ingredients

This recipe only calls for eight ingredients, most of which you probably already have on hand in your pantry. The only one that you might not have or be familiar with is buttermilk powder.

Our local grocery store carries it as do many other grocery stores or chain stores. You can also find it online at places like Amazon. In the stores, it’s usually with the baking goods, near the powdered milk products. (Product Link: Saco Cultured Buttermilk)

Besides the buttermilk powder, you only need the following ingredients:

  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Dill Weed, dried
  • Freeze-Dried Chives
  • Parsley, dried
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

One batch fits perfectly into a half-pint canning jar. You can also store it in old spice containers or any other type of jar as long as it has a tight-fitting lid to keep out moisture.

Instructions For Dry Ranch Seasoning Mix

This is one of the easiest recipes I’ve had to write for my website. (This and also my Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe.) All you really need is a small bowl, a spoon or small whisk, a few measuring utensils, and an airtight container to store the dry ranch seasoning mix in.

To start, add all of your ingredients to a small bowl. If you are going to be storing the mix for a while, I suggest only using dry ingredients. This mix will be good for several months when using only dry ingredients – if you don’t use it all before then!

If you are going to be using the mix right away, you can use fresh dill weed, chives, and parsley. However, you want to make sure that there is no excess moisture when storing the mix long-term. (I normally stick with all dry ingredients for our household.)

Mix together the ingredients using a whisk or spoon until they are well combined. You should get about 13 tablespoons of dry ranch seasoning mix with one batch of ingredients.

Feel free to double or even triple the recipe for storing in larger containers or for gift-giving. We are big fans of making and handing out homemade gifts when we can! And who doesn’t love a little Ranch goodness, especially for us Midwestern folks!

Storing And Using

Store the dry ranch seasoning mix in an airtight container. I like to use a half-pint canning jar with a lid for storing my dressing mix. One batch fits in there perfectly. (Product Link: Ball Mason Jar Leak-Proof Lids)

Use the mixture any time a recipe calls for dry ranch seasoning packets or mix. One store-bought packet usually equals about 2 tablespoons of this mixture.

To make Ranch dressing, simply mix 1/4 cup of the dry ranch seasoning mix with 1/2 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayo, and 1/2 cup buttermilk. Alternatively, swap out the sour cream for Greek yogurt for an even healthier Ranch dressing.

Chill the dressing in the refrigerator before serving. This helps the ingredients and flavors to meld together better.

Store the dressing mix in an air-tight container and it will be good for several months.

Some of our favorite ways to use the dry ranch seasoning mix are in Mississippi Smash Burgers, Savory Ranch Seasoned Crackers, and Mississippi Pot Roast. They also make excellent seasonings for Roasted Pumpkin Seeds or sprinkled on top of hard-boiled eggs. There are actually a ton of ways to enjoy the seasoning mix when you start thinking about it!

I hope you enjoy this homemade dry ranch seasoning mix as much as our family does!

Until next time, thanks for stopping by!
